It’s crazy to think that my first slip dress purchase wasn’t until a few months ago. I mean, I haven’t always been a girly girl, but dresses hold a prime spot in my wardrobe. And their wear has been consistent for quite some time. Just so happens that none of them are cut on the bias, resemble an underslip, or have spaghetti straps. I fell in love with a leopard print dress (shocking, no?) back in the Fall, and it just so happened to be a slip dress.
In truth, I feel my love for the slip dress is the product of downsizing my own closet. Not only have I recognized the value of investing in pieces, I’ve seen the versatility of simple styles. Getting back to the basics, placing importance on the classics, and finding creative ways to wear them is where my true style lives. And if choosing more simple pieces gives way to a more well rounded closet, then this minimal approach to style is my ticket in.
All said, a slip dress is as much of a wardrobe staple as a good pair of jeans, or even a white tee. It’s the base to your outfit formula, and layering a simple denim jacket or opting for pumps can generate both casual or chic, depending on the day’s vibe. I love to explore new ways to style this classic, so let’s look at several ways to wear a slip dress this Spring.
The two slip dresses I’ve chosen to style this season, I purchased from Anthropologie and J.Crew. I’ve made sure to link several other options for those looking to add one (or two) to your wardrobe.
One of my favorite ways to wear a slip dress is to where it with sneakers. It reads casual or dressy, depending on where you’re going and works for almost any occasion. Layering an oversized cardigan gives you warmth on colder days.
add a jacket
Just as I stated above, the slip dress is a base to your formula. Depending on the days vibe, adding a jacket (of any kind) has the power to create and solve any look you’re going for. Casual? Grab a denim jacket. Chic? Opt for a black blazer. Sophisticated? A trench coat will fit the bill. The options are endless when it comes to individual style.
play with textures & prints
When it comes to styling a simple piece like the slip dress, playing with color, textures, and prints we truly love helps us narrow down our individual style.
I like to describe my style as feminine with a bit of edge. So layering classics – a graphic tee and denim jacket – with cool scrunch booties is a great way to source my favorites and narrate my style.
layer it up
It’s a dress turned skirt! At least that’s the way it appears, am I right? Layering a tee, sweater, or closed button up top helps give the allusion of a completely different piece. It adds so much versatility!
