While I’ve a whole list of new content on docket (more to come this Spring!), learning your view on established content was needed. Safe to say – my weekly capsule series topped the polls of interest and they are here to stay!
All said – welcome (back) to my weekly capsule edit. In this segment, I will show you how to style three items for an entire week’s worth of outfits! For our first week back, I thought to spotlight investment pieces.
It’s very typical of me to conduct a closet clean out at the beginning of year. The New Year always seems to bring an onset of organization and with it, a need to clear out excess clutter. Having learned the value of minimization, this January closet clean out paralleled any quest to develop and understand my style further.
However, I didn’t realize how much this clean out would define the value of an invested wardrobe vs focusing on trends and fast fashion.
I’ve definitely fell victim to fast fashion and purchases based on affordable trends. Don’t get me wrong, the whole idea behind these weekly capsules is to provide you tools to see what pieces work and don’t work within your style. And if purchasing these items (even if they are categorized as fast fashion) fit coincidentally with current trends and within your style deck – that’s a good thing! Your style is yours!
This past clean out, however, brought to light the reality of how I was building my wardrobe. As the donation pile grew by the minute, I realized my wardrobe was the result of random bargains and impulse buys. The crave for new out-turned a low cost closet barely worn.
Now I know the ‘influencer’ part of this gig is somewhat to blame – many of the items and pieces I own are gifted. But the clean out still placed value on the importance of investing in pieces that will last. I’ve learned that fast fashion really isn’t affordable and the price tag sadly often mimics the quality. More so, my closet has a high turn over rate. Years of this repurchase pattern has cost far more than it would had I invested in quality pieces meant to last.
I’ll add that while fashion comes and goes – style is not momentary. Style is about your identity. It evolves and grows and has the ability to say something about you. I must be careful in selection, justifying my spend on pieces that will suit my existing closet. Ultimately choosing items that make me feel confident and inspired everyday is the end goal.
All to say – this week I chose to spotlight four investment pieces that do just that. Three are categorized clothing and the last, an essential accessory. Amongst all the repurchasing that went on in past, these four seemed to make way to my closet to stay. They’ve proven their monetary value in versatility, wear, and functionality. Below I’ve curated and styled 7 outfits for the week using the iconic trench coat, a favorited pair of denim, functional flats, and an everyday tote.
Iconic trench coat: This timeless coat is comfortable and more so, practical. Most trench coats are water resistant, making it a great option for various weather conditions. The one I have is older, from Princess Polly, but I’ve made sure to link several options below to adhere to any interest.
solid pair of denim: Investing in a good pair of denim helps to maintain durability, and versatility in your wardrobe. This Agolde pair is a top favorite and one I pull often. Having read reviews, I ordered my true size and find they fit really well. And while I typically love a little distressing in my denim, this pair is solid – making them a well rounded, smart closet addition.
functional flats: A flat shoe that isn’t a boot, sandal, or sneaker can come in handy when going for a polished or dressy look. They also serve dual purpose when worn casually. I finally gave into the Rothy’s rave and they are definitely worth the hype. The pointed toe style is chic, functional, and truthfully, the most comfortable pair of flats I [now] own. For me, they fit tts.
everyday leather tote: I have a ton of bags, but typically stick to one. Simple and plain as day, this Madewell tote goes with me everywhere. It’s the essential that holds all essentials!
