Hi friends! I hope all of you had a restful Holiday and ring into the New Year! I myself, have enjoyed a much needed break – I stepped away from social media for a bit, let go of expectations, turned 40, and submerged myself in the joys of having absolutely nothing on schedule. It’s been a breath of fresh air. But if you’ve been here a while, you know me – I am always thinking, planning, and creating. My lax days have provided much opportunity to think, reflect, brainstorm and set my sights on all I’d like to see here at TSS in 2022.
My focus this year is to fine tune my niche even more – lay out the foundation of minimizing our closets, and get the most wear out of those pieces. I’d love to provide you a space to go to when you’re just not entirely sure how to style something.
If you’ve been here a while, you know Fall is my most favorite season. Winter isn’t as favored. Not to say I don’t love cold weather style, it’s just harder for me to style looks when the majority of the time, I am in-doors. Truthfully, I’d rather opt for sweats most days. But I know establishing routine and getting dressed each day provides a sense of accomplishment. I am simply more productive and happier when I ‘get ready’ on a daily basis.
Knowing the benefit, I still struggle to style in the Winter. I love every piece of clothing that hangs in closet and am working to find purpose for each, but it’s often hard pulling pieces from other seasons to accommodate the one you’re currently in. My style rut stems from questions like, “Can I really wear this basic white tee when it’s 30 degrees out?”
As simple as it sounds, starting with the basics is the key when in any sort of styling rut. Start with what you have and build from there. Basics are called basics for a reason. You can piece a look from them, no matter the season. They are so versatile, they become timeless.
I figure that everyone reading this post is here for one of three reasons: you’re in a seasonal style rut looking for outfit inspiration, you’re venturing into learning more about capsules, basics, and making the most out of your wardrobe, or you love the idea of a minimal closet and are looking for a few new staple additions to make it complete.
Wherever you’re at, I’ve got you. Below are 7 basics casual outfits you can copy this Winter. These looks each stem from a closet staple. For those looking to add to your wardrobe, I’ve included options under each description.
crewneck cashmere sweater: A solid crewneck sweater works as a great canvas to build on for everyday. You can pair it with denim, pants, skirts, or even layer over dresses. Dress it casual, this Winter, by pairing it with denim and a fun printed sneaker.
black jeans: Black jeans add so much value to our closet that we tend to forget! They are clean, sophisticated and reliable for all occasions. While they arguably are the most versatile pant and can be worn with just about anything – a simple monochromatic look is a winning default. Combine this staple with a leather jacket, combat boots, and a warm scarf for a stylish fit.
white tee: When I think of basic, the tee is front and center. It’s versatile, classic, chic, economical, and comfortable. Definitely a must in closet. Tho it’s short sleeve, we can still utilize it as a layer in the colder months. Combine with your favorite cardigan, sneakers, and skinny jeans for a clean everyday fit.
striped sweater: A striped sweater is a great addition to any wardrobe, simply because they’re one of the easiest prints to wear. It’s cozy, comfortable and classic. Combining this print with seasonal textures and fabrics helps to surface style creativity.
black leggings: With so many people working from home these days, black leggings have become a go-to staple. They certainly have been mine. While this post centers around casual, don’t dismiss their ability to turn dressy. Double layer for warmth with a graphic sweatshirt and sophisticated sweater blazer.
white button up: This top is quite possibly the top that goes with everything. Button it up and tuck it in a pair of distressed denim for a chic fit. Make sure to layer tights when it’s chilly out!
dark wash denim: Without a doubt, jeans are very versatile. A dark wash pair of jeans (skinny or not) provide a level of formality in closet. Dressing them down is so much fun when you mix prints! I love the color tones of this fit, don’t you?
